* I am offering online therapy sessions for MA & OR residents on a HIPAA-compliant platform. Hello, my name is Cynthia (she/her). I am a licensed clinical psychologist in MA & OR. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I served as a public interest attorney in MI and OR. As a psychologist, I continue to work from an anti-oppressive framework, approaching therapy as a collaboration. I specialize in longer-term psychotherapy to enable deeper understanding of the meaning behind manifest symptoms by exploring one’s distinctive history, upbringing, and cultural context as it relates to the present. However, flexibility and collaboration are central to my approach for those desiring brief consultations for specific situations. I draw from psychoanalytic and attachment theories, which value understanding how our internal and external worlds interact. I pay attention to the contextual thread comprising our present selves including our early experiences and the cultural, sociopolitical milieu we inhabit. I have experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds in inpatient/outpatient hospital settings, community mental health clinics, and college counseling centers. I am especially interested in shifting patterns of psychological trauma to embolden one’s sense of agency and increase cognitive and emotional flexibility for a more compassionate and creative sense of being with self and others.
I, along with my dog, specialize in working with men aged 18 to mid-30s with an ADHD diagnosis, navigating a world built for "neurotypical" people and experiencing the frustrations, uncertainty, and confusion that comes with it. I frequently work with men to address issues related to stress, worry, emotional sensitivity and reactivity, anger, irritability, rejection and self-doubt, motivation, and relationships. I emphasize the mind-body connection, mindfulness, lifestyle design, healthy communication with self and others, and understanding your story - what makes you you, and why. My sincere hope is to help you find ways to heal and learn from the past, find peace and contentment in the present, and embrace the future with optimism. I grew up in the Midwest, earned my masters at Columbia University in New York, and found a home in Portland. Among other things, I am a father, a step-father, a son, a step-son, a husband, a brother, a step-brother, a grandson, an uncle, a friend, and a client (I have a therapist, too!). Along with my formal education and professional experience, these roles and relationships shape my practice more than I can possibly imagine. Go Blazers!

I believe that darkness is an opportunity to find our own true light. Pain is a guide that leads us to be fully present with our experiences and unearth their true meaning and wisdom. We all have the ability to find and know our truth. We hold our own healing and answers deep within ourselves. My role is to provide a nurturing, respectful environment where I stay connected and present with you in this discovery process. Although this may be challenging and uncomfortable at times, it will lead you to more self-appreciation and self-love in your healing journey. I use an eclectic and integrative approach unique to you which includes Client-Centered, Attachment Theory, Gestalt Therapy, Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Hakomi. I do not take this work lightly and am deeply humbled and privileged to walk with you through your individual healing journey. I have a deep appreciation for the human experience and I value diversity. I work with people of all races, spiritual faiths, and LGBTQ community. Are you struggling with communication in your intimate relationships, feeling isolated, coping with a difficult breakup, transitioning majors or phases of life, or experiencing grief from a loss? As a licensed psychologist, I work with students, focusing on the "here-and-now" to help clients make build more effective and rewarding relationships, develop insight, and break through internal and external barriers. I aim for an environment of support, compassion, and challenge. I specialize in processing grief and loss, men’s issues and masculinities, relationship distress, immigration/minority stress, building self-compassion, and transitions (e.g., questions about a major and career change) through collaborative approaches. I predominantly use interpersonal, relational, and dynamic therapies to help clients reach their goals.
Some of my specialty areas include working with clients who have experienced attachment trauma in their families of origin and have struggled with codependency or self-worth wounds. I frequently work with queer clients and with those who are questioning or exploring meaning and purpose relative to their larger societal or spiritual life, particularly those who find themselves outside the mainstream in their sexuality, beliefs, or social values. I provide assistance with communications, boundary-setting and interpersonal difficulties and focus on depth and narrative work with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy framing, including present-moment and somatic emphasis of emotional experience.
The clients I work best with are ready to take an attitude of curiosity and reflection towards the patterns and beliefs that no longer serve them. You may be experiencing depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, or relationship stress and are hoping to relate to emotions in a healthier way or gain new self-perspective. Whether it is your first time in therapy or are returning to address matters from a new light, I believe in the innate wisdom of each person and approach our work humbly.
I identify as a queer woman and specialize with LGBT folks. Poly and kink friendly! I may be a good fit for you if you want a therapist who is genuine, transparent, warm, and friendly, who sees you as a unique individual and tailors our work to identify and meet your needs. I bring a social justice lens and understanding of systems of oppression into therapeutic work. I will tell you what I am thinking, will challenge you intellectually, and actively engage with you. I will be open and honest in answering your questions, work collaboratively with you, describe our options, and check in often. Clients often tell me that our work has helped them to sort through their thoughts and feelings to gain clarity, to grow, to learn about themselves, to develop confidence, and to feel empowered to make important decisions. I employ a flexible approach tailored to the needs of each client. I also provide assessments/letters for gender affirming surgery. It is difficult to find the right therapist based on a short profile! Feel free to contact me with any questions. I am currently accepting clients for telehealth only. I accept Aetna, GEHA, Pacific Source, and Meritain insurance and out of network insurance benefits.
As an art therapist and counselor, I utilize the process and product of art making to support individuals in discovering insight, moving toward growth, and finding balance. Art therapy can offer an alternative means of communication to express difficult emotions or experiences that may feel impossible to put into words. You do not have to identify as an artist to find healing through art therapy. Art making is always optional and no artistic skills or previous experience is needed. If you would like to learn more about what therapy might look like or how I can support you, please feel free to contact me.
